Music plays a very important role in the life of our school. It is infused throughout the curriculum and is highly popular part of the wider life of the school. As well as the ensembles, choir, orchestra and bands, many students opt to take individual or small-group music lessons in school with a wide range of instruments and voice catered for.

The music programme in Primary School is extensive and encompasses a wide range of creative experiences.

Timbertots, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 all enjoy opportunities to sing, dance, compose music, learn about composers, learn music theory and play instruments in music class.

In Primary School, the students sing, move, play instruments, start to compose music and are introduced to theory and music composers. In addition, students learn to play the recorder during their music lessons in Grades 3 and 4.

In Middle School, students develop their appreciation of musical genres and have lots of hands-on experience working collaboratively with classmates to explore rhythm and create compositions.

Highlights of the year include the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Throughout the year, students have every opportunity to sing in the choir or play in ensembles and chamber groups.

The “state-of-the-art” Performing Arts Centre reflects the quality and variety of music opportunities available to students, from the 20 unit midi-lab (computer and music recording lab) to the spectacular music rehearsal space which contains a grand piano, full drum kit, electronic pianos, amplifiers, guitars, bass guitars and orchestral percussion, 4 practice rooms and of course our 400-seat theatre.

The music programme encompasses a wide range of creative experiences which include music appreciation, Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, Girls’ Choir, Chamber Choir, and the opportunity to audition for the AMIS [Association for Music in International Schools] International Honor Band, Choir, Girls Choir, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Band and Orchestra Festivals that are held throughout the world. Performance opportunities include recitals, musicals and concerts throughout the year, both within school and for the community.

Instrumental Music Lessons

St. John’s organises private instrumental lessons for students. Lessons are available for students after school and during free periods, lunch and recess. Lessons are usually 30 minutes once a week, but longer or shorter lessons can be arranged and are charged on a pro rata basis. Our program also offers preparation for external exams such as those of the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College. For more information, please contact:

Private Music Tutors

St. John’s International School (SJIS) facilitates private instrumental tuition by connecting parents with passionate and inspiring specialists. We recommend private instrumental tutors following a due process, but it important to note that the teachers are independents and are not employees of the school. St. John’s International School is committed to the safeguarding and welfare of all students and appropriate checks are made before recommended private tutors are appointed.

Private music lessons will be delivered as part of the Extra-Curricular Program (ECP). Early learning school and lower primary will be allowed to follow the private lesson during school hours upon request from parents, agreement of the homeroom teacher and availabilities of the music teacher.

For student of grade 4 and above, the lessons will take place after-school between 3.45 pm and 6.45 pm or during lunchtime. The lessons will take place in the PAC.
