After months of hard work and dedication, the St. John’s community came together last week for an unforgettable run of Les Misérables. Over four days of performances, our theatre filled with the iconic music, emotion, and power of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, brought to life by more than 80 talented students across two full casts, supported by a committed backstage crew and a team of parent volunteers.
This year’s production was one of the most ambitious St. John’s has ever staged. Students devoted countless hours to rehearsals, choreography, set construction, and character work. Behind the scenes, our crew mastered lighting cues, quick scene and costume changes, prop management, and the many moving parts that make a production of this scale possible. And our parent volunteers—who stayed late into the night sewing costumes, perfecting uniforms, and ensuring every detail felt authentic—played a vital role to make it all possible.
What made this performance especially meaningful is its connection to the place we call home. Victor Hugo completed Les Misérables right here in Waterloo, spending two months on the historic battlefield in 1861. Today, a statue in Waterloo marks his time there.
Performing Les Misérables in the town where part of it was written is a special privilege, and our students embraced it fully.
As the final curtain fell on Sunday evening, the applause wasn’t just for the voices on stage, but for the families who supported late-night rehearsals, the teachers and staff who guided every step of the process, and every student who poured heart, time, and talent into creating something bigger than themselves.
